Acupuncture: What are the Benefits?

Written By Breen Chiropractic Clinic, PC on July 28, 2021

Acupuncture BenefitsFor most of us, the word “acupuncture” conjures up images of needles sticking out of the body everywhere. Sounds painful, right?

The truth is, acupuncture is a natural technique that can actually be quite relaxing and offers many health benefits. Whether you suffer from back, neck or joint pain, muscle tension, or are looking to lose weight, acupuncture may offer a nontraditional answer.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that seeks to balance your body’s energy to achieve a state of balance and health. It is based on the principle that we all have an energy known as “Qi” (pronounced “chi” and sometimes referred to as a “life force”) flowing through us. Mental or physical ailments are the result of congestion in the flow of Qi.

To correct this, acupuncture uses very thin, sterile needles inserted at specific points throughout the body to specific depths. Stimulation of these points with the needles restores the proper flow of Qi and a state of health. What points will be targeted, how many needles will be used, and the depth to which they will be inserted is determined by the specific condition you want to treat.

What to Expect with Acupuncture

Your acupuncturist may begin your treatment by asking a number of questions to understand what you hope to achieve from this therapy. After this, you will sit or lay so that the area to be stimulated is exposed. The acupuncturist will carefully and slowly insert the needles into the area. Some people report a slight pinch, but most say it is not painful or even feels relaxing.

The needles will remain in place for about 5 to 30 minutes, and they may be heated or electrically stimulated while in place to increase effectiveness. This is also painless. Often soothing music or scents are present during the session to help you relax. When the treatment time is up, the needles will be removed.

When performed by a professional, acupuncture is safe and few side effects have been reported. The number of sessions required and how long it will take to see a result may differ based on the condition you are treating.
