When your workstation is designed ergonomically, you won’t experience aches and pains, stress, or discomfort completing your daily tasks. Workplace ergonomics can reduce the strain put on the body, and eliminate emotional stress associated with these work tasks. Our chiropractor in Manassas can help you make your workstation more ergonomic and improve your overall health and energy.

What is Workplace Ergonomics?

Workplace ergonomics is the study and practice of creating a work environment or workstation that modifies the work to fit the worker, rather than the other way around. The purpose is to alleviate or prevent discomfort associated with long hours spent in the workplace sitting, standing, and completing repetitive tasks. Creating a more ergonomic workstation makes completing everyday work tasks easier and less stressful.

How to Make Your Workstation More Ergonomic

You can make your workstation more ergonomic by adjusting it to fit the tasks you complete every day, using ergonomic office equipment, and prioritizing your health and comfort throughout the day.

  • Use an adjustable office chair—your office chair should offer lumbar support; have a back that encourages proper posture; and allow the arm rests, seat, back, and chair height to be adjusted to meet your needs.
  • Keep your computer monitor at eye level.
  • Use a wrist pad while typing.
  • Maintain proper posture—when seated, keep your feet flat on the floor, with your thighs tilted slightly downwards. Your back should be pressed against the back of the chair. Keep your shoulders straight and your head level (not tilted upwards or downwards).
  • Get up and stretch frequently.
  • Keep frequently used objects and equipment at arm’s reach.
  • Alternate between sitting and standing, if possible.

How Workplace Ergonomics Affect Your Health and Energy

When your workstation is ergonomic, your daily routine won’t feel as tiring. You’ll be conserving small amounts of energy throughout the day by creating an easier workflow for yourself. Maintaining proper posture and reducing your risk of workplace injuries, repetitive stress, and aches and pains will affect your overall health positively.
